Hockey match on mountain summit is first in UK

HOCKEY players felt on top of the world when they played a match with a difference.

They played at the summit of Snowdonia’s Craig yr Aderyn (Bird Rock).

Players from Dysynni Hockey Club threw down the challenge to their sponsors, Tywyn-based snack brand Wild Trail, who formed a rival team with colleagues from their Monmouth office and parent company Brighter Foods.

The hilltop match, believed to be a first in the UK, took place adjacent to the summit of Craig yr Aderyn, which sits at 258m above sea level and offers views stretching from the sea all the way inland to Cader Idris.

Rather than the usual smooth hockey pitch surface, players had to content with long grass, bumpy ground and strong winds as they battled for victory in the match dubbed ‘Hockey Heights 2017’.

The match, featuring both senior and junior players, appeared to be heading for a draw until a last minute goal from Pippa Rollings gave Dysynni a dramatic 1-0 victory.

Dysynni Hockey Club coach Lynda Bennett, who also works for Brighter Foods, said: “We’d wanted to play a hockey match at the top of Craig yr Aderyn for ages and it was great that we were able to get a team from Dysynni to play our sponsors, Wild Trail and Brighter Foods.

“The owners of the land gave their full blessing and it was fantastic to play in such stunning surroundings. Players had to contend with some rather unique playing conditions which made for an entertaining experience for both spectators and those taking part!”

Robin Williams, CEO of Wild Trail and Brighter Foods, said: “Through both Wild Trail and Brighter Foods we’re proud to support local people and local teams.

“Our partnership with Dysynni Hockey Club forms part of this and we were delighted to accept their challenge. Craig yr Aderyn forms part of the story of our Wild Trail brand and it’s a place that we all love and treasure so it was the perfect location.

“Hockey Heights 2017 was played in great spirit, with some hilarious moments, and was great fun for all involved.”
