Questions as floods close three Aberystwyth pubs

By Caleb Spencer in Other News

QUESTIONS have been asked about the state of Aberystwyth’s drains after heavy rain caused flooding in the cellars of three town centre pubs on Monday morning.

Torrential and persistent rain overnight on Sunday and into Monday forced the closure of Lord Beechings, the Cambrian Hotel and the Vale of Rheidol pubs, all on Alexandra Road.

The fire service was in attendance, and pub staff told the Cambrian News their cellars were “knee-deep” in rainwater shortly before they were due to open.

As the Cambrian News went to press yesterday afternoon, the pubs were still closed for the clean-up.

One councillor said he understands the flooding was caused by blocked drainage pipes on Alexandra Road, and he has vowed to find out whether enough has been done to ensure the drains are kept clear.

Tara Hayward, team leader at Lord Beechings pub, on Alexandra Road, said: “All of our basement rooms have been completely flooded up to your knees. It is not very pleasant, to say the least.

“The main room is used for storage of all the spirits and beer kegs.

“It happened at about 11am — we were about to open when we realised the water was flooding in.

“We had heavy rain and the drains usually drain it away. Apparently everyone’s drains have flooded.
