Aber all set for battle of Seasiders

ABERYSTWYTH Town continue their battle for Welsh Premier League survival when they travel to face Llandudno in the battle of the Seasiders at Maesdu Park this Sunday (ko 4.15pm).

Interim manager Wayne Jones could take many positives from his side’s goalless draw against Cefn Druids a fortnight ago, but league points are of crucial importance at this stage.

With Cymru Alliance champions Prestatyn Town and Welsh League leaders Barry Town United both being granted FAW domestic licences this week, two clubs look set to be relegated this year.

Aberystwyth are just two points clear of second-from-bottom Rhyl, and they face the Lilywhites in a Good Friday showdown at Park Avenue, before completing their campaign at Newtown on 22 April.

Jones, who has taken charge of the team after manager Matthew Bishop was asked to step aside, will be looking for his side to build on the solid platform shown against Cefn Druids.

"It was just a little unfortunate that the chances didn’t happen for us, although we created enough to have won the game, we hit the bar twice and struck the post," reflected Jones.

“But in terms of the work ethic, and our game plan, everything was spot on.”

Jones will be heartened by the clean sheet, having watched his side concede 14 goals in the previous four games - but the Seasiders have gone six games without a win.

“We worked hard in the week to try and be more compact, because we’ve conceded a lot of goals recently,” reflected Jones.

“To be fair, the guys have dug in, but we defended well from the front, which maybe we haven’t done in the last few weeks, and that’s credit to the front line as well."

He added: “I reiterate that if we show the same kind of character and effort, and do our homework on how we should set out, I think that we’ll be in very good stead.

“We have gone through a lot of change and transition this season, but for the here and now, it is very important for everyone to stick together and be united.”

Just five players from Aber’s starting line-up that won 1-0 away in Llandudno back in August remain at the Club in what has been a remarkable season of transition at Park Avenue.

Aberystwyth let a 3-1 lead slip before losing 4-3 to Llandudno at Park Avenue in February, having been held to a goalless draw with Alan Morgan’s men last October.
