Readathon raises £100 for local mental health charity

A CHARITY reading session has raised over £100 for a mental health organisation.

Around 20 students from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor celebrated World Book Day just a little differently this year by taking part in a 12-hour sponsored Readathon.

The students were joined by several Welsh celebrities on the Pwllheli campus in a push to raise funds for MIND Ynys Môn & Gwynedd, with Dewi Pws, Nia Parry, Mari Gwilym and Dewi Prysor amongst those who popped in to offer their support throughout the day.

From reading activities to karaoke, from talks to fancy dress, the activities on offer were varied and staff and students joined in the fun.

The day culminated in a grand finale by local pop band Pyroclastig, of which Student Union president Gethin Glyn and Cân i Gymru hopeful Hawys Bryn Williams are members.

Staff worked hard throughout the day to ensure that those taking part in the readathon were fed and watered, with refreshments being made available throughout the whole 12-hour stint.

Marian Jones, library and IT facilitator, and organiser of the event, said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for the whole campus to come together, have fun and raise funds for an excellent cause!

“We are thrilled that so many famous faces joined us during the 12-hour readathon, and were thrilled that so many at the college became involved with such enthusiasm.

“MIND Ynys Môn and Gwynedd is our nominated charity this year, and I am pleased to say that we raised £129.52 on their behalf.”
